BLS (Basic Life Support) is the healthcare-provider level certification covering adult, child, and infant CPR, AED use, and team-based response. Heartsaver CPR/AED is the layperson certification for workplaces, teachers, coaches, and community members. If your job is in healthcare, you almost certainly need BLS.

Most American Heart Association and American Red Cross CPR certifications are valid for two years. You can renew with a shorter renewal class before the expiration date — renewals are typically half the length and cost less than an initial certification.

Layperson Heartsaver CPR/AED courses typically range from $65 to $110. BLS Provider courses run $75 to $120. Advanced courses like ACLS and PALS range from $250 to $375. Group rates are usually available for 5+ students.

Most workplace and OSHA-compliant certifications require a hands-on skills check with a live instructor. Blended learning lets you complete the cognitive portion online and the skills portion in person — often in under two hours of in-person time.

If you select an AHA or Red Cross course, your eCard meets the standards used by virtually all U.S. employers, hospitals, schools, and licensing boards. Employers can verify your card with the QR code printed on it.
