CPR certification for dental practices

Which certification is requested
BLS Provider is the usual requirement for dentists, hygienists and, in many states, dental assistants. It is frequently tied to licence renewal, which makes it a compliance matter rather than a practice preference.
Where the practice holds a sedation or anaesthesia permit, the requirement typically rises — often ACLS for the dentist administering moderate or deep sedation, and sometimes PALS where children are treated. These permit conditions are set by the state dental board and are specific about which certification counts.
Which issuing organizations are accepted
State dental boards commonly accept the American Heart Association and often the American Red Cross, but several name the AHA explicitly for sedation permits. Because this is licensure rather than employer policy, the wording in your board's rule is what matters — read it rather than relying on what the practice did last time.
Is online-only enough?
No, for anything tied to licensure. Dental boards generally require a hands-on skills assessment, and some explicitly exclude fully online courses. Blended delivery with an in-person skills session is normally acceptable.
This is a common failure point at renewal: an online-only card bought in a hurry is rejected by the board, and the licence renewal stalls.
How often you need to renew
Two years for BLS, ACLS and PALS. Because dental licence renewal runs on its own cycle, the two rarely line up — track the CPR expiry separately rather than assuming the licence renewal date will remind you.
What to verify with your board and practice
- Your state dental board's exact wording on which certification and which issuing organizations count.
- Whether assistants are covered by the same requirement in your state.
- What your sedation permit requires, if the practice holds one.
- Whether the practice arranges on-site group training — for a whole team this is usually cheaper and easier to schedule than sending people individually.
- Whether the board requires the card to be current at the point of renewal submission or throughout the licence period.
