CPR certification for security officers
Many states tie CPR and first aid to the guard licence, and armed officers are often held to a higher standard. What to check before renewal.

Which certification is requested
First aid with CPR/AED at the layperson level is the usual requirement — Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED or the Red Cross equivalent.
Three separate sources can impose it, and they stack:
- State licensing. Several states include first aid and CPR in the training required for a guard licence or registration, and some require it specifically for armed officers.
- The client site. Hospitals, schools, stadiums and industrial sites frequently require it in the contract, sometimes at a higher standard than the state does.
- Your employer. Security firms often standardise on one certification across all officers regardless of posting.
Officers working sites with AED equipment on the wall are commonly expected to be trained to use it, since they are typically the first responder on scene.
Which issuing organizations are accepted
State licensing bodies and clients commonly accept the AHA and the American Red Cross. Where a state maintains an approved training provider list for guard licensing, that list governs — check it before booking rather than after.
Is online-only enough?
Generally not. Where CPR is tied to a licence or a client contract, a hands-on skills assessment is normally expected. Blended delivery is usually acceptable.
Other guard training — legal powers, report writing, use-of-force theory — is often delivered online, which can create the impression the CPR component works the same way. It usually does not.
How often you need to renew
Two years for the card. Guard licence renewal runs on its own cycle, often annually or every two years depending on the state, and the two rarely align. Track them separately.
Where the requirement comes from a client contract, expect the client to ask for current proof at short notice — site audits are common.
What to verify with your employer and licensing body
- Whether your state requires first aid and CPR for your licence class.
- Whether the requirement differs for armed officers.
- Whether the client site imposes a stricter standard than the state.
- Whether AED training must be included.
- Whether your employer provides or reimburses the training.
- Whether the state has an approved provider list.
