Medic First is CA Emergency Medical Services Authority Approved Program

The epinephrine certification card issued by the EMSA allows an individual (lay-person or off-duty EMS personnel,) to obtain a prescription for and administer an epinephrine auto-injector to a person experiencing anaphylaxis, with civil liability protection. State law allows physicians to prescribe epinephrine auto-injectors to businesses and the general public after completion of proper training and certification.

Certification authorizes the general public, or Lay Rescuer, and off-duty EMS personnel to administer auto- injector epinephrine within California.

Certification does not replace any training or policy/protocols required by the local EMS Agencies (LEMSA) related to the use of auto-injectors within their jurisdictions for EMS Personnel who are on duty.

Upon course completion, students receive a Medic First Epinephrine Autoinjector training program document signed by the class instructor and are eligible to apply for CA EMSA Epinephrine Auto Injector Certification.

Summary

This course equips participants with the knowledge and skills to quickly assess recognize and care for cardiac arrest provide high-quality CPR and use an AED to optimize patient outcomes. Designed for both in-hospital and out-of-hospital healthcare clinicians this training is consistent with the 2025 evidence-based science guidelines and covers additional life-threatening emergencies including respiratory arrest drowning opioid overdose myocardial infarction life-threatening bleeding and obstructed airway in adults children and infants. Participants complete an online course followed by an in-person session led by an Instructor or self-directed solution that includes knowledge-based learning and hands-on skill practice. Participants are required to successfully complete the online course and final exam and demonstrate skill competency during skills practice and testing scenarios to earn an American Red Cross Basic Life Support certificate valid for two years.

The Flipped format is most similar to a "flipped-classroom approach" where the didactic portion is completed online before class and the in-person session is more focused on the instruction of skills, scenarios, & testing. This course requires a 2025 student manual, completion of the mandatory precourse self-assessment, AND completion of the mandatory precourse work (videos) BEFORE class.

The American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Course, updated to reflect the 2025 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC, teaches participants how to recognize and respond to life-threatening emergencies involving adults, children, and infants.
