Summary

This course equips participants with the knowledge and skills to quickly assess recognize and care for cardiac arrest provide high-quality CPR and use an AED to optimize patient outcomes. Designed for both in-hospital and out-of-hospital healthcare clinicians this training is consistent with the 2025 evidence-based science guidelines and covers additional life-threatening emergencies including respiratory arrest drowning opioid overdose myocardial infarction life-threatening bleeding and obstructed airway in adults children and infants. Participants complete an online course followed by an in-person session led by an Instructor or self-directed solution that includes knowledge-based learning and hands-on skill practice. Basic Life Support (BLS) is available in two different training methods – blended learning and classroom training. All BLS course options teach the same AHA science-based skills and result in the same AHA BLS Course Completion Card.

The American Heart Association’s ACLS course builds on the foundation of lifesaving BLS skills, emphasizing the importance of preventing cardiac arrest, early and continuous high-quality CPR, and high-performing teams. The course reflects science and education from the 2025 American Heart Association Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).

The Flipped format is most similar to a "flipped-classroom approach" where the didactic portion is completed online before class and the in-person session is more focused on the instruction of skills, scenarios, & testing. This course requires a 2025 student manual, completion of the mandatory precourse self-assessment, AND completion of the mandatory precourse work (videos) BEFORE class.

What does this course teach?

After successfully completing this course, students should be able to:

• Apply the BLS, Primary, and Secondary Assessments sequence for a systematic evaluation of adult patients
• Discuss how the use of a rapid response team (RRT) or medical emergency team (MET) may improve patient outcomes
• Discuss early recognition and management of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS), including appropriate disposition
• Discuss early recognition and management of stroke, including appropriate disposition
• Recognize bradycardias and tachycardias that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome
• Perform early management of bradycardias and tachycardias that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome
• Model effective communication as a member or leader of a high-performance team
• Recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance
• Recognize respiratory arrest

Is there a required textbook for this course?

The AHA requires that all students have a student manual for the course, therefore, students must bring a 2025 ACLS Student Manual, hard-copy or eBook (purchased seperately.) Without the book, the student will not be permitted to participate in the course.
